While beach holidays may not be the first thing you would expect to find in Amsterdam’s most major city, there are a number of manmade city beaches within easy reach of your Amsterdam hotel by public transport. If you go a little further, you can enjoy a full beach resort as well.

Blijburg

First established in 2003, this manmade beach styles itself as the cultural beach idyll of Amsterdam. It’s not hard to see why, with its exciting DJ sets hosted regularly during summer on the sand, plus lots of great places to go for food and drink. Yoga, salsa, movie screenings and much more also take place right here at the beach. You can even get here by tram, making this Amsterdam beach an ideal choice for a short visit.

Strand West

Amsterdam’s newest city beach, this wide sandy area boasts a beautiful view of the River IJ. Just a short bus or tram ride from the center of the city, here at Strand West you can choose to play some beach volleyball, dine at the water’s edge or simply sip a relaxing cocktail.

Strand Zuid

This compact yet fully equipped city beach is a very flexible option for relaxing on the sand right in the heart of a big city – it can even be covered when it rains! Located next to the famous Beatrix Park, this manmade Amsterdam beach has a cafe terrace and restaurant plus DJ sets at the weekends.

Zandvoort

Just 27 minutes from Central Station by train, the Zandvoort beach resort village is the perfect place to go for a relaxing day trip out of the city. The nine-kilometre stretch of beach is home to all kinds of recreational activities, including beach sports and dozens of cafes right on the sand.
